Lightfoot was born on August 4, 1962, in Massillon, Ohio. She graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, and went on to earn her Juris Doctor degree from the University of Chicago Law School. After law school, she worked as a federal prosecutor in the United States Attorney's Office in Chicago, where she prosecuted cases involving drug trafficking, corruption, and financial fraud.

Prior to becoming mayor, Lightfoot served as the president of the Chicago Police Board and as a senior equity partner at Mayer Brown, a global law firm. She also worked as an assistant United States attorney in the Northern District of Illinois and served as chief of staff and general counsel for the Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communications.


As mayor, Lightfoot has focused on addressing the city's challenges, including crime, economic inequality, and affordable housing.
