In 2024, the Pope again entered the political conversation, speaking critically about both Donald Trump and then Vice President Kamala Harris. Pope Francis raised concerns about policies that, in his view, ran contrary to Catholic teachings. He challenged Trump’s immigration approach and Harris’s support for abortion rights, stating that Catholic voters should evaluate candidates by moral principles and choose what he termed the lesser evil. These remarks reaffirmed the Pope’s commitment to engaging with political topics through a moral lens, even when it meant confronting powerful figures.
Despite these tensions, Donald Trump made a notable appearance at Pope Francis’s funeral in April 2025, signaling a level of personal respect for the pontiff. While their policies and principles often stood in opposition, Trump’s attendance underscored the role the Pope played as a religious leader beyond politics. Following the funeral, Trump publicly endorsed Archbishop Timothy Dolan of New York as a potential candidate for the papacy, though this endorsement was largely symbolic, as Dolan was not seen as a leading contender.
